How should we present our VR experiences at the Maker Fair?
I believe the most important factor is creating an instant sense of amazement in the audience. So I think the most effective way to present would be starting with the next level stuff: The Vive and the Rift. When people first step into the world that the Vive creates, it really gives people an idea of just how impressive and amazing VR can be. Then afterwards we can present the cardboard and a mobile way to experience the same immersion cheap and on the go. Personally, I don't think presenting deeper ideas of the concept of reality can effectively be presented without is being forced and convoluted. But I suppose if we must, the best way to do it would be immediatly after the audience has had a chance to experience VR for themselves. How can we incorporate Dewey's Ideas? Dewey's ideas of how education should work mainly focus on increasing student interest and critical thinking. One of the biggest advantages VR could give in that respect would be their ability to immerse students in a more stimulating environment for more difficult or less interesting subjects. For example, students who do not enjoy history may be more interested if they could be placed in the historical setting and see history for themselves. I think it would also be best to talk about this immediatly after the audience has experience VR for the first time to get an understanding of what it's like. The audience will be able to easily picture Dewey's ideas being put into place with the possibilities available through VR.

One of the most important learning moments I've had was in 8th grade. There was a project I had been incredibly excited for since I had entered middle school: The Hovercraft Project. When It came time to begin, my group couldn't be more dysfunctional. As hard as I tried, each group member wouldn't work, or wouldn't follow critical instructions correctly. By the time we were a week from our deadline, it seemed our project would be a disaster. But one day my teacher went up to me and explained to me what her strategies were to get people in groups to work together such as checklists for the group that each member would sign to accept credit for the task. When the members saw that they were going to be held accountable for how much (or how little) they were gonna put in the project, they changed their mood. Eventually, we were able to create a hovercraft that we were proud of. This experience taught me that with the right system, any group of four can accomplish the creation of a great product.
What celebrations do you have for this week?
We have accomplished what I thought would be the hardest parts from the projects. Creating an infinite environment, and player tilt control. Finishing those parts so early will likely allow us plenty of time to tweak and refine them for a very mechanically solid play experience. And I believe that is the most important part. Describe a time where have you experienced cognitive dissonance during this project. How did you deal with it? It has been a very long time since I have programmed. A lot of the issues we run into during development have been very confusing or unsensical. It has been incredibly difficult for us to troubleshoot considering how little of the code we had time to write and had to simply insert. However we have been working hard to understand every piece of script we have and use our combined knowledge to do what we can. How did your opinion of hashtag activism change over the course of the week? My general opinion of hashtag activism has hovered around indifference. I appreciate its ability to spread awareness of issues, however, it seems to take the "active" out of "activism" because real demonstrations require organization, members, and leadership which is something that hashtag movements can never have because of their nature. Describe any concerns you have about whether the people you have hired will be able to produce a VR world that will meet your rubric's A criteria.
My biggest worry is motivation. I want to be sure that even though their grade is guaranteed that they will be willing to work hard to make a quality end product. How has your perspective on what constitutes reliable news changed? Do you think you are a more critical consumer of information? Why do you think this ability is important to your own life/to the country? Ian. Right now I am sad that fact-checking, and news have become considered two separate entities, and at this point it is us, the reader's fault that we don't question and fact check the news. While I am happy that the culture of insuring accurate news stories has been raised in its awareness, it's for the worst reasons possible. That there may be no news fully trustworthy anymore. What strategies do you find helpful when trying to work in a distracting place? What is working well so far?
I'm a believer in the expression "out of sight, out of mind" when it comes to distractions, although I also spread it to hearing. Hearing: Headphones/in-ears and unobtrusive music such as soundtracks (especially for videos games). Sight: Choose an environment with no distracting items to pay attention to. What problem have you noticed so far with this project and how would you fix it? Not enough things set in stone. When we are being graded based on certain aspects of the project, it can bet very unsettling for those aspects to change unpredictably. For example, as a producer, I worry about managing my money correctly as a part of my grade involves the use of my virtual budget. But when different rules on taxes and limits on spending come up suddenly it can compromise my business plan. How can words be used by those in power to influence our choices? Words and language are what truly separates us from any other animal. The ability to communicate is what allows humanity to build off of other ideas and developments to progress our society to survive and thrive and a species. I believe that language is the most powerful tool those in power can use to influence people's choices and actions, even if those words are misleading or even complete lies. Update: Now that Trump has been elected, now more than ever does this seem to be true. What was the most disturbing prediction in the Singularity reading and why?
Singularity is a famous term among futurologists and philosophers, yet it seems its definition is heavily disputed. As a lover of computers and believer in their inevitable incorporation into ourselves, I suppose the most disturbing ides behind singularity involves the vulnerabilities they create. If someone were able to access the computers inside of our bodies who knows what could come of it? Another issue that troubles me is the transition that may involve the discrimination of those who may be unable to receive these upgrades. The separation between the fortunate and unfortunate is only getting bigger and singularity could be the definitive line that, if unable to be crossed, makes one considered "inferior." In what way was the job fair/interview process authentic? How could it be made more authentic? What did you learn about yourself through this process? The interview process seemed very accurate to me due to the fact that it helped me find out who was rally interested in my project and who wanted the hefty benefits I promised, as well as who really knew their information and what I wanted out of them and if they could step up to it. I learned about what I truly value in the people I would one day hire if I created my own technology company and had a specific project. Does advertising shape or reflect our society? Should there be stricter regulations on advertisers? If so, what restrictions should there be? I believe that the effectiveness of propaganda proves that advertisements shape our society. When people are constantly told a message and lifestyle, of course they will eventually accept it. I believe that advertisements fall under freedom of speech, however, advertisers must be held accountable for making false claims by law. Engineering: I am a producer in charge of designing my vision for a VR space game and leading a team of programmers and 3D artists. So far this week I have trying to learn the different roles that need to be filled and the technology that will be required. Luckily I discovered by vision may not be as difficult as I thought when I discovered that there was hundreds of resources available for my specific dilemma. A challenge I am currently facing is trying to come up with the working hours I will need and coming up with a budget. By next week I am hoping to have a more in depth business plan with hours and budget accounted for.
English: I have always been somewhat cynical towards politics and campaigns. The study on DoubleSpeak and propaganda has confirmed a lot of my thoughts on how politicians act and could think of multiple examples for each strategy we've talked about. What I'm wondering is are there any politicians that have avoided stooping to these strategies (or at least kept it at a minimum)? and do they always work? and if so who do they usually work on? |
